Bob Fletcher And Japanese American Farms

I read this obituary for Bob Fletcher in the newspaper, who passed away at the age of 101 on May 23. I was not aware of this man and his courage in the face of anti Japanese sentiments during WW II. I thought this was interesting. He was a good man and lived a life having done something good. RIP Mr. Fletcher and thanks for doing the right thing.  From the Sacramento Bee:   Bob Fletcher, a Sacramento farmer, volunteer and man of courage and conviction who saved the farms of interned Japanese American families during World War II, died May 23. He was 101. Mr. Fletcher demonstrated the finest human values in one of the darkest periods of American history. It was 1942, a few months after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, when the U.S. government forced Japanese immigrants and Americans of Japanese descent to report to barbed-wire camps. Many lost their homes to thieves or bank foreclosures.   A state agricultural inspector, Mr. Fletcher acted instinctively to help Jap...

What's With All These Asians?

Image
So lately at work I've been hearing a lot of, "What's with all you Asians hanging out together?" God forbid you find two or more Asian Americans hanging out together, because non-Asians will think that we're conspiring to take over the world or something.  Forget that fact that we don't complain when 2 or more white people hang out. There is a fear of a Yellow World on the part of non-Asians.  People of European ancestry were initially the minority when they colonized various parts of the world, so there was always this latent fear that the more numerous natives they subjugated would rise up and revolt. So when non-Asians notice "all these Asians," they're really expressing a fear of being the minority.  They fear that we'll do to them what they have done to us.  The underlying sentiment with statements like "What's with all the Asians?" or "There's too many Asians." is that our very existence is offensive an...

Growing Pains - Part 3

Sorry, I'm a bit late in posting this so it's a little after the fact, but I think there are some relevant points that should be reiterated with MSNBC political commentator Ed Shultz's segment. Visit msnbc.com for breaking news , world news , and news about the economy Transcript excerpt: SCHULTZ: Now, I think that if we had seen a black player`s head in the middle of a watermelon, OK? There would have been tremendous outrage. We have an Asian athlete. An Asian athlete is not seen in the NBA too often. But there was a comfort level that it was OK to put his head in the middle of a fortune cookie -- the Knicks good fortune. Someone decided to put that on the air. You know, I`m amazed at it. There`s a lot of things I could have led with tonight to start this show out, but I`m just driven to make sure that this conversation happens in America because I think we teach hatred and we teach racism. Young kids don`t grow up with it. They are taught this. PETERSON: That`s true. SCH...

To the Point with Jeremy Lin

Growing Pains

I didn't want to post much about Jeremy since there has been enough folks blogging about him. But I did want to post a few things to throw some thoughts out there. First of all, it is quite ground breaking what Jeremy is accomplishing. Everybody has his/her own projections onto what Jeremy means, what he represents, etc...to the point where he basically represents a lot of different things to different people with varied experiences. But he also represents some common experiences in which lots of people can identify with as well. In some sense, we're getting into Joseph Campbell's "The Hero's Journey" mythology, some archetype that resonates within our consciousness. Second, this is America. In a celebrity obsessed culture, there are plenty who love to see you publicly fail just as much as they love seeing you succeed. So, the backlash against Jeremy starts with snide comments by anonymous internet posters, attempting to diminish his accomplishments. Of course...

To mojorider : You know..being with her was one hell of an experience for me. I had already learned the value of the dollar from my job, but I guess my time with her taught me that it was good to have a steady income as well as having enough reserve. Also it's really weird knowing that (in maybe 10 years) I want to get married...but that doesn't really bother me too much. It's nice having goals, right? As for goals right now, I just really want to finish school and get my job as soon as I can. Of course, once I enter grad school I'm not going to have any time whatsoever to do anything besides study so before I get in I want to work on becoming a "better" person. Most of the pharmacists I work with have already settled down and have kids and they're always telling me how they wished they could have done more when I was my age. Interests: I grew up as a " tiger " kid in a competitive Asian parental environment. I took seven years of art and ten y...

White People Like to Do Yellowface

I got an email from a reader about a club event in St. Louis called UCD!! Shanghai Showdown! . Here's what he said: hi i am writing to you about a party that is being hosted in st louis at a night club that i feel is extremely culturally insensitive and racist. i have been trying to educate the people on facebook, but they have taken down every link i have posted and reported me to facebook for harassment. i plan on protesting at the club on friday night and was wondering if u can help me at all the link to the event page on facebook is UCD!! Shanghai Showdown! and a quote from the event if u can not see it is: "...The theme for this party is SHANGHAI SHOWDOWN, so get creative and bust out your best asian themed costumes to get your discounted admission before 12! Think geisha, ninjas, samurai, dragons, koi, pandas, or even a giant takeout box! Remember: When you dress up, you're not just at the party; you're a part of it!" this is a 97% caucasio...

People of color shouldn't have to fight amongst ourselves for crumbs tossed out by the larger society. I was once at SF State at the Ethnic Studies Program, and an African American woman came in and got offended by the fact that the three people working the office were Asian. Our very presence was somehow offensive to her.  "What's with all these Asians?!" She kept going on and on about how she didn't see no Asians during her days in the Civil Rights Movement. She couldn't see past our eye shape and recognize that we were on her side.  I think that is what a lifetime of dealing with bigotry and discrimination can do to you. When you cannot recognize friend from foe and you recognize race instead of the merits of one's behavior, then you are mentally colonized and racism has an outpost in your head. A person of color can still have a piece of white supremacist ideology lodged in his or her subconscious. Not every Asian is my friend and not every non-As...

Why is it that when crap like this happens, that non-Asians say, "Oh it's just kids fighting" or "It's not racial"? Asians are constantly being attacked in poor neighborhoods and on buses and when the Asian community brings it up as a legitimate safety concern, some pissant who lives in another neighborhood downplays it. Asians deserve dignity and deserve to be safe from violent racist fucktards.
